Sasha Okun – New Works 2002 – 2005
The tragic-comic figures of ageing titans which inhabit Okun’s paintings, seam frozen in their tattered nudity in a passing moment, which carries the death of what is presently alive. These images might have been considered as caricatures if it wasn’t for the almost verbal superb quality of Okuns art of painting. The picturesque sphere is build by tension systems; without being drawn toward Surrealism, an ongoing dialogue is created with the painting traditions, mostly those of the Italian Mannerism, also creating an opening for a new private and public language.
Okun’s works are narrative by nature, combined into a system of apocalyptic images in which the intimate space is penetrated by a violent reality, describing the gaze drawn to look upon the horror, without the ability to be moved aside. Thus, harmonically combined are the ridicules and the beautiful, the common and the ideal creating a poetical space by the interaction between the real and the imaginary existing in the well formed boundaries of the picturesque sphere.
