INNER STATIONS – 2004 – 2008
Yaniv Waissa
Curator: Dafna Ichilov
15 Mar — 26 April, 2008
This exhibition deals with a collective-cultural memory, which waissa embraces for his personal needs. He embraces on a physical journey with his camera; a visual journey of the sight, imagination and recollection. And an emotional journey back in time, to the districts of memory, districts that contain no comfort; of an insane, absurd. In order for one to deal with the present through the past; views, places and objects are filled with echoes from the past; a past that is a present that lives and revives the memories, the collective traumas, and his personal emotions.
The photographic journeys lead him to the connection between the city and the nature, gradually hurt by man. He examines the surface, the shreds of reality; and himself, the nation he is part of, humanity, nature, and the power balances between them. His works present a constant tension between the past and the future, between man and nature.
Waissa is taking himself to the districts of the past; a past that we try to forget, to erase from our conscience, to hide from our own eyes; This loaded past is- for him – the base of our private reality as a nation, as a country; a collective reality, a reality that offers no heroes or comfort; a reality that presents man through the memory, through remains of life cut down of foundations of the creating reality.
The viewer is invited to take part in a journey to districts of the memory; a present that is still a past; a shattered reality, fragments of meaning and meaninglessness that characterize this era in which we live. Waissa is interested in taking the viewer into those districts, to stimulate the viewer to feel and to interpret this reality according to his own personal charges.
