Works in Black and White
John Byle
Curator: Levin Irit
19 Oct — 25 November, 2002
John Byle was born in Detroit, Michigan. He studied art in Chicago and immigrated to Israel in 1951. Byle was the head of the Art Department at the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design, Jerusalem during the years 1967-77.
In the course of the last three years, Byle has created a series of works in black and white, moving between drawing and painting, in a constant passage between figurative and abstract art. A deep feeling of sub-consciousness, almost on the verge of dreaming, accompanies most works. Sometimes, it seems as if the artist were induced by a dim impulse to express the dark side of existence, which he translates into a chain of mysterious images. The paintings, made layer by layer, are richly textured, thereby creating a unique patina. John Byle was born in Detroit, Michigan. He studied art in Chicago.
