The prize committee’s statement
The large and impressive body of work created by Yam Amrani in recent years attests to a young painter who is shaping an independent artistic path and language. In his large-scale paintings, he re-examines the language of abstract painting while interweaving aspects of contemporary visibility in a world dominated by digital screens.
Amrani’s painterly work is based on abstraction of complex images, mainly representations of the organic body. By means of collage, he fuses these images with a wide spectrum of pictorial gestures, to create a range of color applications, oscillating between the expressive and the graphic. Amrani introduces a fascinating combination of broad, erupting brushstrokes with flat and restrained dabs of color. Via deconstruction and reconstruction, he creates a unified, cohesive, and engaging painterly language.
For all these qualities we have decided to confer the 2023 Osnat Mozes Painting Prize for a Young Artist on Yam Amrani, in the hope that it will serve as a level for fruitful studio work and artistic excellence.
