Winner Of The 2012 Osnat Mozes Young Artists Painting Prize
Alma Itzhaky
Curator: Pioter Shmugliakov
25 Oct — 8 December, 2012
Alma Yitzhaky’s paintings evoke in the viewer a sense of restlessness, melancholy and a meaningless feeling. Where is this melancholy embodied – is it in the bored-like, desperate figures, in the frozen social situations, or in the laborious picturesque treatment of the color areas? And maybe the melancholy is nothing but an illusion, an inevitable legacy of art history imposed on the artist, on her work and on us, the viewers?
The observation of Yitzhaky’s work raises fundamental questions about human existence that moves away from entities. An existence that is incompatible with the alleged language of painting and is no longer suitable to represent it. And thus, courageously and against all odds, Yitzhaky insists on formulating a contemporary painting language that would carry with her brushstrokes the memory of the past, as it seeks to deal with the issues most relevant to the younger generation today.
The award ceremony will be held on 1.11.2012
