Traces V – Beyond Paper
The 5th Biennale for Drawing in Israel
1.3.14 – 21.12.13
Chief curator: Tal Yahas
The Jerusalem Artists’ House is proud to announce the program of Traces V – The Fifth Biennale for Drawing in Israel that will open this winter in Jerusalem. ”The Biennale for Drawing in Israel” initiated by the Jerusalem Artists’ House in 2001
sets out to explore the medium of drawing and to map the diverse spectrum of themes, styles and techniques that dominate the drawing practice today.
The upcoming biennale “Traces V” will attempt to look at the medium of drawing from a new perspective. It will strive to expand its borders and suggest a varied range of interpretations as to the presence of drawing in contemporary art-making.
As in previous biennials, “Traces V” will comprise of several exhibitions, staged by independent curators in artistic venues throughout central Jerusalem, under the title of the main biennale exhibition Beyond Paper. The main exhibition which will take place at the Jerusalem Artists’ House, will set out to examine how drawing is manifested outside the confining borders of what had become the medium’s traditional bond – that of the line and the paper. It would wish to evoke the thought of
how drawing is in fact present in varied artistic practices in contemporary art – hence the biennale will host works in a wide range of media, from sculpture and installation to video, photography, performance and sound.
In addition to the main exhibition, the collaborating venues – the Ticho House, the Jerusalem Print Workshop, Barbur and Agripas 12 – will stage parallel exhibitions reflecting on and responding to the concept of the main exhibition. For the first time, the biennale will also collaborate with Muslala Project in an ongoing community engaged intervention that will take place in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Musrara. Furthermore, the biennale will include a couple of works in public spaces in the city. During the course of the biennale we plan an additional set of events including performance events at the Mamuta Art and Media Center, a collaboration with Harama internet magazine, as well as gallery talks and tours.
More than 90 artists will take part in the biennale, presenting artworks in varied styles and techniques.
The biennale will be accompanied by an internet bilingual (Hebrew-English)
catalogue accessible to all online attraces.art.org.il (the website will be launched in conjunction with the exhibitions’ opening).
