The Biennale for Drawing in Israel, sponsored and produced by the Jerusalem Artists’ House since 2001, has cemented its status as a comprehensive, unique artistic enterprise. Like previous editions, the 9th Biennale is held at the Jerusalem Artists’ House and in other venues in the city center, 3 this year (Koresh 14 Gallery, Jerusalem Print Workshop and Ticho House). The 77 artists exhibiting in the different venues were selected from over 600 Israeli artists who responded to the open call.
Slough, the Ninth Biennale for Drawing, explores the genre of drawing in relation to sloughing—one of the most fascinating and mysterious phenomena in the animal kingdom, largely hidden from view. Drawing is the heart and origin of many works of art. At times, it allows us to search for what existed before something came into being—in the raw, prior to form and name. For one, this may be an end point, for another—a beginning that signifies continuation.
Slough is both end and beginning, the dead sign of the living body. Only recently it was an inseparable part of a body, and now it resides between inside and outside, on the threshold between history and that which has not yet been fixed in language. Much like sloughing and the material surplus it produces, drawing and its substrate embody, at once, potential and its realization, body and remnant, the literal and the interpretive.
The exhibitions at Ticho House, the Jerusalem Print Workshop, and Koresh 14 Gallery, are also underpinned by the idea of the slough as a model for metaphorical or concrete thought, whereby they seek to characterize visual images with spiritual, political, human, and current baggage.
Gallery talks and related events will be held in all venues during the three-month run of the Biennale.

Drawing Films – Screening and discussion presenting a selection of video works reflecting on drawing as an artistic medium.
The films trace the act of drawing and the gestures of the drawing hand. Through the camera’s gaze, the material quality of drawing is emphasized, revealing a medium often perceived as fragile, as a dramatic, profound, and transformative creative force.
