Stone Peels
Haikin Rina
Curator: Hana Morag
8 Jul — 3 June, 2006
The Sculptor Rina Haikin presents a series of stone peels. At first sight this seems a contradiction in terms: The term “peel” carries the connotation of decay and extinction, since it implies organic, living matter; The stone, on the other hand, implies strength, timelessness, and the inanimate. In the fusion between those two poles, so opposed in their associative meanings, there is an attempt to extract from the stone hidden layer, and thus to enrich the language of nature.
“The sensitive handling of the stone emphasizes the eternal dialogue between man and environment. The displacement of the stone is carried out in such undemanding sensitivity we can imagine that if the stone were to be returned to nature we would not sense the impact of the chisel upon it.” (Curator Hanna Morag)
