Sculpture – What Smells Bad to a Giraffe?
Avi Mayer
21 May — 19 June, 2005
Leftover concrete, furniture parts, metal, wood and plastic are just some examples of an endless supply of inspiring materials lying around waiting to be used. Collecting them has become a kind of addiction for Avi Mayer. At times, he will pick up seemingly trashy looking objects knowing that there is a good chance they will be used in some future projects. He loves the use of mixed techniques, putting almost no restrictions regarding materials, ideas and the way they can merge one into the other, leaving as much freedom as possible in the creative process, this approach brings about accidental fittings and can creates some very funny situations in the work; it’s probably what keeps him going. Mayer will do something only for the sake of doing, like collect for collecting sake, this something can trigger later an idea which will then grow into something more complex, while other pieces may stay simple it is always a collaborative effort of many things that makes it to be what it is.
