New Members 2022

10 Sep — 12 November, 2022
As part of a long-standing tradition, the Artists’ House continues to welcome new members to the Jerusalem Artists Association every year, opening the annual exhibition season with a display of their works. This year, three new members have joined the association: Judith Anis, Sara Shira Cutler, and Klil Wexler. Each of them has a different mother tongue and was raised in a different culture, which may be the reason why, although they all engage primarily in painting and drawing, their oeuvres differ entirely in terms of painterly language, artistic practice, and themes.
Sara Shira Cutler creates large and highly expressive oil paintings, heaps layers of paint and human figures on the canvas, which are blended with explosive energy or what appears like a storm of emotions, producing human chaos that ranges between desire and violence, between imagination and reality.
Judith Anis is a diversified artist engaging in painting and drawing, who in recent years has studied the movement of the human body and the way it reflects relationships. The series presented in the exhibition is based on quick drawings created during rehearsals of a pair of dancers, mother and daughter, for a joint dance performance.
Klil Wexler‘s works pit the urban against the rural, and natural landscapes against cityscapes, addressing the transformation of agricultural society in Israel and the gradual shedding off of the myths associated with it: the fields, that filled her childhood vistas, are now leased to outsiders, the agricultural sheds have been abandoned. In a series of oil on wood paintings and charcoal on paper drawings, she creates surreal and disconcerting crosses between images of Shavuoth ceremonies in the Moshav and urban landscapes.
