Two new members have joined the Jerusalem Artists Association this year:
Maya Israel and Gustavo Sagorsky. They will be displayed in two solo exhibitions.
Maya Israel displays in her exhibition “Days and Seas” paintings that are confusing in their proportions. Some of them portray a lonely figure, while others depict groups of small figures; all of them exude loneliness. The figures are set in dissolving landscapes, luscious in color but equally slight and disturbing. Maya’s painting motions are also sculpting motions. The brush is a chisel that carves out figure, air and landscape, juxtaposing them one upon the other, reminding us that they are made up of the same matter, which captures space, as it migrates between fear and serenity.
Gustavo Sagorsky displays in his exhibition two series of works. In “Nerve” he places on center stage the decrepit and the negligible as he embarks on a hunt of breathtaking routine moments. “Study of a long time relationship through photography” is a group of works from a lifelong project in which he photographs his partner, Sonja. Holding his camera, He directs his gaze at Sonja, who replies with a gaze directed both at him and us. The gaze of the three – Gustavo, Sonja and the viewer, hovers over time and events. Something in the couple’s kindness, in their love, doesn’t let this moment to be awkward and invites the viewer to be there, with them.
