Fish Stories
Sergey Engel
Curator: Okun Sasha
18 Jul — 18 August, 2009
The exhibition presents several series of acrylic paintings and ink drawings, all under the subject of the fish which in Judaism gains an aspect of holiness, and is compared to a person observing the depth of Torah. Each series represents an idea derived from this motive, and the interconnections between the series and within them creates a story, built from one representation to another.
Engel’s works describe crossbreeds – half men, half fish, while the borders between them are gradually disappearing. The artist’s deliberate ambiguity creates a space for the dialogue between him and the observer, opening possibilities for multiple legible readings and active observation.
