Family Setting – Paintings
Ayelet Ginosar-Cohen
Curator: Maya Cohen-Levy
4 Sep — 10 October, 2004
This exhibition by Ayelet Ginosar-Cohen evolved from work on a limited number of staged family photos, which she took out of the family album. In the early years of her childhood in Kibbutz Dalia, her family is a circle within the expanded family – the Kibbutz. Ayelet’s painting is austere, frugal, deeply observing. The focusing of the gaze and the scrutinizing of details dissemble the whole, and the picture of the happy family on the lawn falls apart. She makes her corrections through emphasizing specific parts by their actual projection on thicker frames. Ayelet’s palette sums up to just three colours – black, white and yellow – which portray an atmosphere of dejection. The aspiration to beauty is evident in Ayelet’s work, yet turns out to be a thin shell, hiding cracks, fears, tension and unclear threat.
