Contemplating Nudes- Aquarelles

The paintings in this exhibition are created quickly, spontaneously, mostly without a prior pencil drawing. The artist moves her hand at almost the same speed as the movement of her eye. Out of an almost obsessive urge the artist returns again and again to the subject of drawing from observation – the artist’s “scale practice.” This obsession carries with it a great truth. There always emerges from within her works a close connection to, almost a love of, the model. This conflicts with the need of the artist to maintain a distance, which will allow a dialogue of “objectivity” – to view the model in terms of composition and proportion. Maureen emerges from within this struggle as a sharp critic, with an ironic eye mixed with fine humor. And all of this never crosses the aesthetic line; there is always her restraint which guards against the biggest trap of all – the slide towards banality.
