6th exhibition in the 18th Nidbach series: Cu
Nissenhaus Guy
Curator: Efrat Gilad
31 Aug — 12 October, 2013
Guy Nissenhaus, a BFA graduate in Shenkar’s new Multidisciplinary Art Department, presents a site-specific sculpture installation. The installation was specially built for Nidbach exhibition space at the Artists’ House in Jerusalem.
In the work titled “Cu” Nissenhaus creates a sculpture of a swamp. As if inlaying precious stones in a jewel, Nissenhaus inserts dry reeds through thin plywood, glazed by a black shiny surface. A copper wire net captures this “cut out” of a swamp as a hunter’s trap would an animal, uproots it of its habitat, lifting it up and disclaiming the basic rules of gravitation so inseparable to a swamp’s nature.
Nissenhaus mocks the perception of nature as a source of truth, and puts forward a rival reality to concreteness, where a swamp’s surface reflects nothing but itself, creating an expressive and internal image.
