“If you only knew from what rubbish
Poems grow, knowing no shame..”
(Anna Akhmatova, from the cycle ‘The Secrets of the Craft’)
Tamir Lichtenberg’s works reveal something that is familiar and embarrassing, intimate and yet bothersome, similar to the embarrassment we feel in finding an aging beggar near our home – we cannot do without him, yet prefer to avoid eye contact. Common materials – a garbage can, a street corner, an old store on its way to disappear from this world – seem like the generous sources that usually surround his work environment.
In “Ashkara” he chooses to build the exhibition into the space in real time and place, turning the exhibition hall into a creative space. This decision reflects his choice of reductionism, of retracting into a single object and of taking the risk of speaking quietly, or of a short story alien to our time and place.
