Forever | Exhibition in the 25th Nidbach Series

Tohar Gibber’s work is marked by a minimalism that stems from an inner imperative, from precision, craftsmanship, and attentiveness—an attentiveness to the creative process, to its rhythm, and a willingness to accept the transformations that emerge from it. A slow formal inquiry takes shape in her works via acts of subtraction, imprinting, adhesion, and casting. In her skilled hands, these artistic acts become charged with sensation, with a subtle quiver.

The three-part series Subtracted Leaf engages with removal and the exposure of the leaf’s finest veins. Gibber intervenes in the process of its imminent decay, even accelerating it. At the same time, she transforms the leaf into a jewel that remembers its origin, hinting at and signifying the theme of perishing which runs through the exhibition. In the process of subtraction, the shell, the grid, is preserved, if only in part, as a memory template. A piece comprising white threads suspended from the ceiling, Veins in White likewise pulsates with the presence of the leaf, even as it has been stripped of its form.

Amalgamation—a cast plaster column crowned with the imprint of a fallen autumnal leaf, visible in its entirety only from above—reveals a delicate act of substitution and exchange: the vertical cast column gives way to the scenic, horizontal, relief-like leaf; a formalist drama celebrating nuanced yet significant shifts in form and materiality. Together, these elements evoke the austerity of a miniature obelisk, on whose summit lies a moment of softness, of recollection—a dry autumnal leaf that is also a desert landscape.

Lines of Likeness is a hollow relief of a female figure, rendered in earth tones, resembling a topographic map, like a body mask. The decorative texture enveloping the body assumes a deceptive materiality: a tranquil shell which is, at the same time, disconcerting.

In Gibber’s exhibition, one encounters a cohesive body of work, articulating a rich formal discourse. The works are delicate, yet they convey strength; they are restrained, yet charged with emotion. A minimalism that holds abundance.
