In her first solo exhibition, Stav Rozental presents a series of painted ceramic vessels, created over a two-year period (2021–23). The series unfolds as a diary of processed experiences, memories, and emotions, documenting this chapter of her life.
For Rozental, drawing has always been a primary means of expression in moments when “life is too overwhelming to handle,” as she puts it. Drawings that accumulated in her sketchbooks over the years found their way, following a personal crisis, into clay—an accessible material familiar from earlier stages of her life, something of a homecoming. Like the raw material, the vessel itself, as both object and image, provides her with a sense of home, a receptacle containing a fragment of her world—both inner and outer, real and imagined alike. Female figures, everyday objects, animals, family scenes, kibbutz structures, and landscapes of the Jordan Valley—strewn with banana and date palms—where she grew up and where she still lives, emerge on the surfaces of her vessels, together forming a personal narrative that simultaneously resonates within a broader human context.
Rozental comes to ceramics without formal training in the field, approaching the medium with a fresh hand and an intuitive, experimental spirit that often challenges the conventions of “proper” practice. The bodies of her hand-built pot-shaped vessels, which she makes using the traditional coiling technique, are shaped with a precise rawness, and their surfaces are treated with rich, layered coloration.
The vessel, whose voluminous-circular structure is inherent to its very nature, offers Rozental possibilities unavailable on the two-dimensional surface of paper or canvas. Above all, it provides a continuous surface across which she weaves narratives that have neither beginning nor end. Each vessel may be experienced as a distinct narrative, yet the encounter between vessels, placed in close proximity within the gallery, allows viewers to create new narrative constellations of their own. The exhibition becomes an open narrative space that invites the viewer to draw near, observe, walk around, and gradually discover it while moving.
