Ester Haya, An egg of rejoicing, an egg of oblivion the wheel of fortune goes round
An egg of rejoicing, an egg of oblivion the wheel of fortune goes round
25 Mar — 16 April, 2006
The installation symbolizes the link that connects the Jewish custom of eating an egg on the Seder night to that of eating an egg at the time of mourning (at the meal taken immediately after the funeral of a close relative as well as at the meal eaten just before beginning the Tishaa b’Av fast). Placing the egg on the Passover Seder plate and eating it during the Seder symbolize the joy of freedom and redemption. During the period of mourning, it is customary to eat an egg because its oval shape symbolizes the cycle of life and death, reincarnation and rebirth (the wheel of fortune goes round and round). The installation draws the viewer into a conceptual flight, which seeks to comfort, as it draws the viewer into the world of the spirit.
